The geographical area known as the Baixa of Lisbon - historic center becomes pedestrian from this summer 2020. The central part of the avenue de la Liberdade will be partially closed to traffic. Several roads will be developed, including Escola Politécnica and Rua de S. Bento streets. From this summer the only transport authorized to circulate in the Baixa will be that of residents and traders, electric cars, priority vehicles, as well as public transport. According to the mayor, the measure should result in a reduction of 40,000 cars per day in this area. The project is part of the ecological policy of Lisbon, European Green Capital 2020, whose objective is to reduce CO2 emissions by around 60,000 tonnes per year.
