
Tanger Med's performance in 2020 now places it far ahead of other African ports. With 137 direct connections, it becomes the best connected African port in 2020, according to the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD).
This recognition for the Moroccan port was endorsed in a new note, titled “Ports of the global liner shipping network: understanding their position, connectivity and changes over time” from UNCTAD.
While Tanger Med holds the record in Africa, Shanghai (China) ranks first globally with 288 direct connections. Busan in South Korea comes in 2nd with 274 direct connections, followed by Antwerp in Belgium (268) and Rotterdam in the Netherlands (264).
According to UNCTAD, 12,748 direct port-to-port links do not require transshipment in 2020. In detail, services are provided by a single company on 47.2% of these links, while on 2751 routes (21.6% ), there is competition between two suppliers. Of the remaining 3,980 port pairs (31.2%), three or more carriers provide container shipping services.
