THE TOURISM SECTOR WILL BENEFIT FROM NEW AID

Tourism officials estimate an additional 100,000 jobs could be lost this year if they do not receive additional support.

The government is preparing a package of support measures for the country's devastated tourism sector, including delayed loan repayment schedules, debt-to-equity instruments and grants. Holidaymakers' incomes played a crucial role in Portugal's recovery from the 2010 economic and debt crisis, totaling 15% of the country's gross domestic product in 2019. The sector's income is expected to have fallen by 80% in 2020, and tourism officials estimate that 100,000 more jobs could be lost this year if the sector does not receive targeted support.
